How will you measure your life?

I had some take away from the article “How will you measure your life” Harvard Business Review.

It is always difficult to someone what to do, especially to your family members, boss and investors etc. Many smart people don’t tell others what to do, instead inspire them.

Clayton M Christensen shared the story of how he influenced “Intel” chairman Andrew Grow about insisting him produce “Celeron” CPU for the market. It was not good approach to advice directly what to do. But he was talking about the model and how it helped Nucor and other companies. Basically, he was not telling him what to think rather how to think.

From my perspective it was about helping him to make a right decision with conflicted communication technique. Sametime I think why it is that way. Why it is not simply telling directly what is the best way? Clayton M. Christensen understands the complicated world including the rank of people, professional communication, business culture and many other things. He considers everything and makes the “service” fully for only good.

From the Harvard Business School, many people decided what to do with their life and changed their mind for example Ruhana Hafiz, who had a firm decision to work for private sector but ended up serving the government.

He advised three questions to be asked each of us from ourself.

1. How can I be happy with my career?

2. How can I have a happy relationship with my spouse and children?

3. How can I stay out of jail?

The point of the number one question is how to become a better manager. Not just becoming an expert on buying, selling and investing. How to build a better team and help your team to be successful.

The second question is about happiness is exist when the family is happy. Many people choose to be successful on economical side and sacrifice the family relationship, which end up with divorce and other problems. Clayton spent 1 hour every day to find out his purpose of life and being. Eventually he found the purpose of life is not to become a famous and expert but stay happy with his family and help others to keep it that way, too.

He reminded very important message about family. Kids misbehave every day and it will continue for 20 years. You have that much of responsibility and job to do.

So, my understanding is my priorities are;

- Happy family, quantity of time with them

- Happy career, entrepreneurship life that benefits community

Creating culture in family and company is similar thing. For example, many parents start complaining when children start misbehaving in their teenage period. They regret that they have done something when they children were younger.

I had thought what an important point. I try to teach my children how to have a principle to follow during their life. We have a church gospel and value, often try to teach weekly and read daily. So, that they could use the principle in the future during their life. If they apply the gospel principles in their personal life most likely they will figure out many things.

In the company it is same. I have to create a culture that teach new employees and they could use the culture during the employment period in our company.

In order to do this, we got to have a principle that not waivable.

And stay humble how high you reach in the success and still stay humble and ready to learn from everyone.

The most important point is here “Don’t worry about the level of individual prominence you have achieved; worry about the individuals you have helped become better people. This is my final recommendation: Think about the metric by which your life will be judged, and make a resolution to live every day so that in the end, your life will be judged a success” So, my plan is not to count the money or fame, but the people whom I helped.

It matters how are we keeping our relationship with ourselves, others and God. It all 3 matters as Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin taught at the address delivered at the BYU in 1986. Strongly connected with your happiness and wellbeing.

About job, we better follow Jim Collins’ teaching, that Do what you good at it and born to do it and earns money for it. He was trying to figure this out and took him 2 years and eventually found out he enjoys teaching and figuring out systems.

Everyday making better decision leads to bigger and successful company. Some companies change from making one thing to other things and get the high success.

Relationship with other and keeping your principles leads to opportunities. Self-esteem, productivity (it is a pyramid based on principles, then long term goal, then short term goal and daily action), and controlling your life will be essential to you. Integrity is higher than financial freedom in your priority.

So, once again, how many people did I help during my life?

How many kids in one car?

In 1990's one of my memorable Lunar New Year holiday occured and I never forget the day. Traditioanlly we visited our oldest parent or grandparent than start visiting other relatives families. It usually takes at least 3 days and we still have more families to visit. Our aunts and uncles expect us to visit and when we arrive they steam dumplings and prepare big table. When the guest leave the host family gives gift to every one. Children and adults all get something. One problem was many families did not have cars. During the day we use public bus and walk on the street. Sometimes all my cousins and their parents walk together for 1-2 miles or 2-3 kilometers to next families. Big groups of people walking on the street. Kids are happy because they get lots of candies and cash as gift from every family they visit. One time one my uncle bought an old Russian car and he was only car owner among our relatives. After the last visit to one of our relatives it was late night and there...

Honesty and Business Ethics

In the business world we see often dishonest and unethical occurrences. Some people say "Sorry, nothing personal, it is just business" and trying to express it white lie. Is really business having to have a certain number of dishonest actions? When people want to explain it from different perspectives and own understandings it creates endless argument. If here is no ultimate guidance or center of the principles it will be always contention. That is why there is a law given. It is more like natural law of science. Elder Lynn G. Robbins said in the beginning of the world Adam and Eve did not have much to get tempted to sin. He was saying they had nobody to boast, gossip or complain about. Generally, pride comes from comparing oneself to others and try to seek to show off. According to my observation we don't have to necessarily to get better than others but try to keep up with Jones already brings us the bad side. Seeking materials is already leading us to sinful life...

Gratitude and Entrepreneurship

In the bible Jesus healed 10 men with lepers. The unhealable ill of that time till death. But he cured them all. They all went happily but only one returned to Jesus and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thank. Jesus said where are other nine and he was disappointed. Why is gratitude important? Let’s think about it. Well could we reflect upon our lives as individuals. We will soon discover much to prompt our personal gratitude. Can we think about how grateful we are for our mother, father, teachers, and friends? All it starts from what they have done to your life. Thing of every detail and big and small things. Observe your feeling to come. How does it relate to entrepreneurship? The pursuit of opportunities is the essence of entrepreneurship. We define an opportunity as a future state that is both desirable and achievable. We also make a distinction among ideas, possibilities, and opportunities. The process of identifying and exploiting entrepreneurial opportun...
